Video Splitter / Version 2.4 Question -- MKV and x/h264

Hello all..

I was wondering about the MKV container and the x/h264 formats being supported in the next update? This container is hugely popular, as is the 264 video format, and it would be awesome if SolveigMM Splitter would support this. I love this app so much for tons of reasons. So simple to use, it doesnt complicate things, doesnt need to reencode like so many other apps pointlessly do, and if it would support MKV and 264 (AVC), it would be absolutely perfect. I haven't come across any decent programs to work with those properly yet.

So yea, do you guys plan on adding this soon?

Heh, well you mean upload the actual music files? Well.. i mean, it's just basically any vbr mp3 you would have laying around. If you have a CBR mp3 and VBR mp3, you can easily see what happens. The CBR will cut perfectly where you end it. But the VBRs leave about 4-5 seconds over the spot you end the split. I used a 192kbit CBR mp3 and it split perfectly where i cut it. But when i used a V0 VBR mp3, well the point where i ended the cut, i get about 4 seconds more.

Also, the seeking is kind of a hassle too, but nothing too major. I always have to pause the mp3, in order to seek/search. If i use the slider while its playing, it skips and locks up for a few secs and repeats random pieces and takes about 6-8seconds to recover. So i always have to pause, mark it, search, play, pause, mark, etc, rather than just have it playing as i skip around with the slider.

My only main complaint is just the extra 4-5 seconds or so that gets added on to the end of a split when working with VBR mp3s. Now i could convert them to a CBR bitrate myself, but thats an extra step people will not want to deal with. Just so you know too, this only happens with MUSIC files. When i split xvids/wmvs that use VBR audio, it always cuts them perfectly where i split.

Btw, the joiner problem i mentioned can now be disregarded. Its normal for some info in the tags to get out of sync when joining 2 files, since you cant obviously have the same exact title name and bitrate info listed twice lol. Two VBR files when joined, always shows the first track's time. With two CBR mp3s, well the time is shown as the sum of both, but...thats really not a big issue and probably not possible to fix anyways, as thats probably how the mp3 codec works in that case.

Oh i forgot something else too. Just now i cut an Xvid that uses LAME codec as the audio. The piece i cut still shows LAME. However, when cutting a single MP3 that uses LAME, the cut piece shows as FHG. Most people will prefer the cut MP3 to be exactly the same as the original, with the tags and all info carried over. Im not sure if its re-encoding it, as the bitrate is still the same, but something in the program is using FHG when it splits mp3s.

Btw, Dmitry, i wanted to add something here. When i trim an MP3 too, it gives me too much of the end. Like i always hear an extra 5seconds of the end piece i split. Is there anyway i can stop this. Is it some keyframe issue or something?

Edit: Just realized it only does this on VBR mp3s. A couple other splitters i tried do the same thing as well. Wish there was a way to stop that from happening

Ok Dmitry, i just tested out 2 mp3's to join up. Now it does work fine, no quality loss and it plays perfectly. Just some minor things to point out. Take a look at this pic i took of the orginal files and the joined file:



Notice the TIME of the 1st song is 4:46. The 2nd is 6:36. But see how the joined file is showing the time of the 1st song? Also, both tracks are 192k (they were originally V0 VBR, but i reencoded them to 192 as to avoid any VBR problems, since joining two VBR files usually dont come out right since the rates arent truly the same..but i tested that too and still worked, albeit, with the same time/info discrepancies).

Basically, the time of the joined file should be the sum of both the tracks, but it only shows as the 1st track's time. Also, the bitrate should be 192, not 457. (Realistically, its still 192, yet the program decides to add a larger number or combine them hehe). Anyway thats possible of clearing up? I used a joiner in the past and dont remember seeing the info/time being misrepresented.

Overall though, the files do join and play fine, so nice work. 

And what about the MPG1 video support, any news?

Ahh ok i see. Ever use Virtual Dub for Avi editing and other things? I think its kind of like that, right? When opening MPG in Vdub, it parses the file and then next time i open it, its much faster, nearly instantly.

That AVC1/X264 (in .MKV container) wont be too difficult for you to add as well? You could be first one ever to support it  . I used many types of these apps a few days ago and not one of them had support for it. Most high definition movies i get are in MKV container, encoded on AVC1/x264. Sometimes like to keep a certain piece, but as you know, files in 720p or higher are very large, and dont want to keep gigs of stuff, when i can just keep 100mb or less. Im not an expert, so im not sure is MKV container is more complicated for you, than AVI,WMV,MPG,etc.

This is a just a basic video splitter, albeit, a great one. But its not going to do anything like that lol. Its just a manual splitter/trimmer of pieces you want to cut out of files. It has batch splitting i think, but nothing like what youre looking for.

Damn, seems Dmitry is going to add that too, pretty wild

Heh no problem man. I had another question too and forgot to ask about it last time. Whats that file that is made from MPG? It has the extention mlmix. Even opened MPG1 file and thought it would work  . Seen the mlmix file for MPG1 as well.

Hey man, thx for responding. Thats good news, and not too far off so i will be patient  Every file i threw at it worked great. No lock ups or errors, all formats played fine in the player too. I swear, every other app out there is so bad. Either they force you to convert, have garbled and distorted images after the split, or play in slow motion in the player due to bad decoders being used. The only app that was useful was Easy Video Splitter, but its too old (2003 and not updated anymore), doesnt work with enough formats, and WMV vids freeze for about 5-7 seconds before playing them after split.

Your splitter doesnt seem to be very well known right now either, for whatever reason, but i will do my part to spread the word about it for you. Once it can do MPG-1,  AVC/H264 and MKV formats/containers, it will be best splitter available

As for the browser, i use Firefox. I just sent a message on it now, called 'testing, please disregard' and it went through. I guess it was just a temporary issue hehe. I can send my original message there again if you like, but since im here posting to you directly, i didn't bother to try again.

Dmitry, I am very pleased with this application, as ive been through dozens like this, and your product is 'near' perfect.

Now i say near, because it unfortunately doesnt support MPG-1 and i find that quite strange, because it supports MPG-2. Most MPG files of video people use/download are usually going to be in MPG-1 format. I would surely purchase this application if it could support MPG-1 as soon as possible in a new version. Can you please do this for someone who is pulling their hair out trying to find the perfect splitter?  I really do like it, especially since it doesnt force you to re-encode like most other applications make you do, and i really hate that! 

Also, is it possible you can add support for AVC/x264/h264/MPG-4 and the .MKV (Matroska) container? That would definitely make your product supercharged and perfect. But in any case, i would really appreciate the MPG-1 (as im sure most others would too) support first. I have so many MPG-1 files and i was hoping to use your application to split them up 

Thx for hearing me out and great work on a great product that is so hard to find in this category  Honestly, ive literally been up for hours, and went through nearly 20 applications and they all stunk like a particular 4 letter word 

Oh yea, one more thing, i also tried to email on the SUPPORT/CONTACT page where the Splitter is listed, but i got a PHP script error or something
